The Cheddar Sweet Kitchen was set up in the early 1980's with the intention of producing many of the Old Fashioned types of Confectionery that were made by the local home made sweet shop which was so popular up until the second world war. Owned by the Mizen family who have been making sweets in the area for over 100 years, 5 generations of the family have now been involved in the business
In the period between the two wars virtually all towns and many large villages had their own small sweet shop where the local Sweetmaker produced a huge range of Hand Made Confectionery, which was only sold and known locally. When these shops closed many types of favourite products disappeared, The Cheddar Sweet Kitchen set out to remedy this situation and now produces a huge range of old fashioned .
Owing to its geographical position, situated in the heart of Cheddar Gorge, it was decided to open a production area with a viewing facility so that visitors could see just how things were done. This has now become one of the area's major tourist attractions, welcoming over 100,000 visitors every year. Now believed to be Somerset's top free visitor attraction.
