Chilli Fiesta 8 & 9 August
As the summer hots up so do the events, the Chilli Fiesta is one not to be missed.
With its wonderful and vast collection of chillis (200 plus) grown in the magnificent restored Victorian Glasshouses and displayed in pristine rows in every shape and size ranging from the serene green through to red hot. And to whet the appetite even more, there are hot and spicy foods on sale, chilli growing demonstrations, salsa music and lots of dancing.
This cult event has been running since 1995 and brings devoted chilli fanatics from all over the world, creating a very special hotspot among the nation’s food events.
300 chillies and sweet peppers on display in the immaculate glasshouses come in all shapes, sizes and colours; including the hottest chilli in the world: Naga Jolokia, also known as Bhut Jolokia, Ghost Chilli or California Death Pepper. This was confirmed by Guinness World Records in 2007 to be the hottest chili in the world, replacing the Red Savina.
For those wanting to experience the ultimate chilli high there are the Naga chilli plants and seeds available to buy from stallholders Joy and Michael Michaud who own and run Peppers by Post, a small market garden that grows and sells fresh chillies by post throughout the UK. Their Naga variety known as the Dorset Naga, originally from Bangladesh, but now grown on their farm in Dorset holds the record for the hottest heat levels ever published for a chilli. Joy says, “We can’t grow the plants fast enough, the British have gone mad for them!”
There are chilli growing and cooking demonstrations and tastings galore ranging from the mild to the very hot chilli sauces, jellies, salsas, chutneys, relishes, marinades, nuts and crisps. Even chilli chocolate, chilli ice cream, chilli beer and chilli fruit juices are all on sale.
Admission to the Chilli Fiesta is £7.25 for adults plus concessions. The event is open between 10.30am and 5pm.
