Riverford Organic Foods

Riverford brings organic seasonal vegetables, fruit & meat from the farm to your door. Order and change youre vegetable, fruit and meat boxes as and when it suits you or make up your own food box from their list of vegegtable, dairy, soup, juices and more. Overall their organic food boxes are 25% cheaper than the supermarkets and that doesn´t include their free delivery!

As Riverford Organic Food box orders have grown they have joined up with farmers in other parts of the country so that the vegetables can be grown close to where they are eaten. They now have a sister farm in Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire, Hampshire and the latest addition in Cheshire. If you are lucky enough to have a local farm shop that actually grows its own vegetables (a rarity) or a local box scheme that is both organic and grows vegetables locally, then your vegetables may be more local. If not then your organic vegetable food boxes are very unlikely to have travelled less distance or be fresher than Riverfords organic food boxes.

In 2007, 78% (by weight) of the fruit and vegagetables in their boxes was grown in the UK. (This was a bad year for home-grown crops – they aim for at least 80%). They use as much home-grown fruit and vegetables as they can and encourage customers to make the most of local and seasonal produce, without being so dogmatic that they drive them back to the supermarkets. The small percentage they import includes all the citrus and tropical fruit that won’t grow in this country. The proportion of imported vegetables is around 10%.

They've  discovered that the environmental cost of bringing unseasonal fruit and vegetables from Southern Europe is much lower than growing them under heated glass in the UK. (please also note wines on their site are not UK made either)
